THE CHINESE KNOT

Since the practice, attitudes and principles around superstitions vary a lot from one culture to the other, one can easily make unlucky mistakes when travelling in different countries.

During a Sunday afternoon I was hoping to learn how to make several different tranditional Chinese knots just by asking people I met.

The Chinese ornamental knot is a very popular decoration and it represents many auspicious meanings, such as friendship, wealth, happiness, harmony and reunion. The knots are often used as gifts or ornaments to express good wishes, including prosperity, love and the absence of evil.

I thought that in pursuit of favorable things, this art form and skill had been handed down from generation to generation as a folk handicraft with a long history and profound cultural connotation.

But, nobody knew how to make knots. The experiment ended in one big confusion and disorder.
